Tragedy struck on the airwaves of Good Morning Britain as and Richard Madeley broke from their usual schedule to announce a devastating rail incident.

On Tuesday morning (October 22), the presenters reported the chilling details of a fatal collision involving two trains in Wales. Richard, visibly concerned, shared that following the catastrophe, one individual had perished while another 15 sustained injuries.

Susanna began: "Good morning; it is eight o'clock, and breaking news this morning. A Large-scale emergency services operation, including fire and rescue and the coastguard, is underway in Wales following a rail collision involving two trains."

Richard continued: "One man has died, and another 15 were injured when the Transport for Wales service to and from Shrewsbury crashed on a single track line last night."

Authorities have confirmed that those hurt in the crash are not at risk of life-threatening or life-altering conditions. The collision took place near Llanbrynmair, along the route connecting Shrewsbury and Machynlleth, shortly after sunset at 7:30pm on Monday (October 22).

A representative from expressed that their team responded swiftly to the scene near Llanbrynmair following a call about "a low-speed train collision involving two trains".

Emergency services including the transport police, Welsh ambulance crews, firefighters, the coastguard, and rail industry agencies were all in attendance. National Rail alerted commuters that due to the "operational incident", there would be closures and potential disruptions with cancellations and changes to the train services, reports .

Meanwhile, GMB's own Katy Rickett, who was on the scene, mentioned the sparse details available regarding the causes and circumstances of the mishap.

The harrowing reality of the situation was brought home by two witnesses who came forward; one described the scene as "brutal" after witnessing a train hit an abrupt stop when travelling at approximately 50 mph.

Adding to the eyewitness accounts, another shared a heart-stopping narrative of the driver noticing a stationary train ahead too late to avoid a collision, urging passengers to "brace themselves" before impact.

Katy expressed her horror at the tragedy: "It sounds absolutely horrendous, and the worst part of this is that one man has died."

BTP Superintendent Andrew Morgan announced the sad news and offered condolences, saying: "We can sadly confirm a man has died following this evening's incident. We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, alongside everyone else impacted, and specialist officers continue to provide support."

Regarding the investigation, he detailed: "We are working closely with emergency services and the rail industry to understand the circumstances leading up to this collision."

Additionally, Superintendent Morgan promised more police in the area following the incident: "Residents will see an increased policing presence in the area in the coming days as a result."
