Mozilla and Chrome Users: The Indian government's cybersecurity agency, CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team), has issued a serious security warning for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox users across the country. According to the agency, several major vulnerabilities have been discovered in both browsers that could be exploited by hackers to steal your personal data or cause your system to crash.
Which users are most at risk?
CERT-In's report indicates that the Google Chrome flaws primarily affect Chrome OS and ChromeOS Flex users. Meanwhile, Mozilla Firefox vulnerabilities can target users of Firefox, Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release), and the Thunderbird email client.
What could be the harm?
Usually, cybercriminals can hack into your system and steal sensitive data through vulnerabilities in Mozilla Firefox. These vulnerabilities primarily involve a Use-after-free bug in MediaTrack-GraphImpl::GetInstance(), memory corruption, and the Web Extension API. Furthermore, flaws like Address Bar Spoofing in the browser on Android devices allow hackers to mislead users by displaying fake websites.
In the case of Google Chrome, the threat is related to a Heap Buffer Overflow, which has been found in the Video, Sync, and WebGPU components. A hacker can create a unique website and trick users into clicking on it, thereby attacking their system.
How to stay safe?
CERT-In recommends that users update their browsers immediately. Both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox have released new security patches to address these security flaws.
Tips to stay safe
- Set your browser to auto-update mode.
- Do not use outdated versions.
- Avoid clicking on any suspicious websites or email links.
- Regularly update your system's security software.
