What is the viral claim?

In this message going viral on social media, it is being claimed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has ordered all banks to stop giving ₹ 500 notes from their ATMs by 30 September 2025. It is also said in the message that by 31 March 2026, ₹ 500 notes will be completely removed from 90% of ATMs and only ₹ 200 and ₹ 100 notes will be available.

The government organization PIB FactCheck investigated this message going viral on social media. PIB has called this viral message completely fake.

PIB said through a post on its X (earlier Twitter) handle that "No such instructions have been given to banks by RBI. ₹ 500 notes are completely valid and will remain valid."

PIB has clearly stated that this is misleading and false information which is spreading rapidly through social media, especially WhatsApp. Also, they have appealed to the people not to believe any such rumors and before sharing the information, verify it from official sources.
