What if you come to know that RBI is going to ban the 500 rupee note as well? Yes, one such message is going viral on social media that the 500 rupee note is going to be discontinued very soon.
The whole of India has not completely forgotten the demonetization that took place on November 8, 2016, when the central government had immediately discontinued the 1000 and 500 rupees in circulation at that time. After this, the government also introduced new 2000 and 500 rupees notes in the market. However, very soon the 2000 rupee note was also withdrawn from the market. But what if you come to know that RBI is going to ban the 500 rupee note as well. Yes, one such message is going viral on social media that the 500 rupee note is going to be discontinued very soon. But what is the truth of this viral message, let's know.
What is the viral claim?
In this message going viral on social media, it is being claimed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has ordered all banks to stop giving ₹ 500 notes from their ATMs by 30 September 2025. It is also said in the message that by 31 March 2026, ₹ 500 notes will be completely removed from 90% of ATMs and only ₹ 200 and ₹ 100 notes will be available.
Now what is the truth of this message?
The government organization PIB FactCheck investigated this message going viral on social media. PIB has called this viral message completely fake.
PIB said through a post on its X (earlier Twitter) handle that "No such instructions have been given to banks by RBI. ₹ 500 notes are completely valid and will remain valid."
Has RBI really asked banks to stop disbursing ₹500 notes from ATMs by September 2025? 🤔

✅ No such instruction has been issued by the @RBI.
✅ ₹500 notes will continue to be legal tender.

PIB has clearly stated that this is misleading and false information which is spreading rapidly through social media, especially WhatsApp. Also, they have appealed to the people not to believe any such rumors and before sharing the information, verify it from official sources.
Has any instruction come from RBI?
PIB said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not issued any such notification, circular or instruction asking banks to remove ₹ 500 notes from ATMs. In such a situation, saying that ₹ 500 notes will not be available from ATMs from September 2025 is a completely fake and baseless claim.
Why do such messages go viral?
The purpose of such messages on social media is to spread fear and confusion among people. Many times such messages can create a situation like panic-buying or cash crunch. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every citizen to verify any kind of information before sharing it.
