In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the skies continue to display stark contrasts. While one region reels under scorching temperatures, the other is drenched in unseasonal rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this to a surface trough that may persist for the next three days.
According to the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre, “Some areas may receive light showers, others could experience heavy rainfall.” Thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching up to 60 km/h have prompted orange alerts in several Telangana districts.
Heavy rain forecast in Telangana
Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Khammam, Siddipet, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy are on high alert. The IMD has issued orange warnings for these districts due to forecasts of thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds.
A yellow alert has been sounded for other districts including Adilabad, Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, and Mahabubnagar. Rain is expected to continue in Telangana until 20 May, followed by light to moderate showers.
Andhra Pradesh prepares for downpour
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh is also bracing for rainfall. The Disaster Management Department has confirmed, “Scattered heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Andhra Pradesh today.” Districts such as Alluri Sitarama Raju, Vizianagaram, Manyam, and East Godavari are under the radar for thunderstorms and lightning.
The Department added that light to moderate rain, with possible lightning, is expected in Eluru, Palnadu, Prakasam, Kurnool, Nandyal, YSR, Annamayya, and Tirupati.
Thunderstorms are also forecast for specific mandals in the affected districts, increasing the need for public vigilance.
Low-Pressure System Brewing Over Arabian Sea
Tamil Nadu's extended rainy spell
In Tamil Nadu, rainfall will likely continue until 20 May. The Chennai Meteorological Centre explained the situation in detail. “An upper atmospheric cyclonic circulation is present over the southeast Bay of Bengal. Due to this, a low-pressure system may develop over the Arabian Sea on May 22.”
Today, heavy rainfall is predicted in Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kallakurichi, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Nagapattinam.
Rainfall is also expected tomorrow in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai.
In Chennai and surrounding regions, skies remain partly cloudy with intermittent light showers. “Showers have occurred in several areas, leading to cooler and more pleasant conditions,” noted the Centre.
Forecasts suggest rain will last until 4 PM in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, and Puducherry.
Delhi Sees Relief from Dust Storms, Awaits More Rain
Cooler winds sweep the capital
Delhi woke up to calmer weather today after experiencing intense dust storms and thunderstorms the day before. These conditions briefly lifted the oppressive heat.
The IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky with light rain and thunderstorms. A yellow alert is in place, with temporary wind gusts possibly reaching up to 50 km/h. Morning dust-raising winds are also expected.
Despite the relief, the mercury remains high. Maximum temperatures between 40°C and 41°C are expected over the weekend, with minimums around 26°C.
Air quality, however, remains a concern. Following Thursday’s storm, several parts of Delhi reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) above 300 on Friday morning.
Rainfall Across 13 States and a Broader Weather Shift
IMD forecasts widespread rainfall
From the northeast to the deep south, 13 states are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall starting this weekend. These include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Telangana.
The IMD has warned that Bihar is also likely to see heavy rain on Sunday.
In the northeast, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected throughout the week. Tripura, specifically, may experience isolated heavy rainfall on 17 and 18 May.
Widespread weather changes across India
Other regions are not exempt. Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Karaikal, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh will continue to see thunderstorms and light to moderate rain.
The west and east-central parts of India — including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Sikkim — are forecast to receive sustained rain for the next seven days.
The northwestern belt, covering Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, will also receive scattered showers until 21 May.
Heatwave Warnings in Northern and Central India
Warnings for intense heat in parts
While much of the country braces for rain, several northern states remain under heatwave warnings. These include Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, Southwest Uttar Pradesh, and North Madhya Pradesh.
Both Bihar and Odisha are expected to endure hot and humid conditions today. The IMD has urged residents in these regions to prepare for potentially extreme weather.
As India oscillates between storm and sun, preparedness remains key. From umbrellas to water bottles, citizens are navigating the nation's ever-changing skies with cautious eyes.
