The annual exhibition Beyond Limits, now in its 25th year, opens today at the Arpana Art Gallery, Academy of Fine Arts and Literature, Siri Fort Institutional Area, New Delhi. Organised by Family of Disabled (FOD), a non-profit that has worked for over three decades to empower persons with disabilities, the three-day event (October 10–12, 2025) brings together a compelling collection of art that transcends physical limitations.
A Showcase of Talent Across India
This year’s edition features over 100 artworks by 78 artists with disabilities from across the country — many of whom are emerging names rarely represented in mainstream galleries. Participants come from diverse regions including Assam, Meghalaya, Delhi, Jammu, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Telangana, and Maharashtra.
The exhibition’s strength lies in its diversity. The works range from bronze and marble sculptures to paintings on canvas and paper using oil, acrylic, watercolour, poster colours, and mixed media. Together, they reflect both regional traditions and contemporary experimentation, offering visitors a glimpse into the vast creative potential that exists within India’s disability community.
A Platform Beyond Charity
Beyond Limits was conceptualised not as a charity showcase, but as a serious art platform that provides visibility, recognition, and financial independence to artists with disabilities.
“We do not promote artists on charity since we want people to visit Beyond Limits every year to get inspired and motivated by the art on display,” says Preeti Johar, CEO of Family of Disabled. “This platform aims to provide financial support, public recognition, and appreciation to the participating artists.”
About Family of Disabled (FOD)
Family of Disabled (FOD) was founded in 1992 by Rajinder Johar, who became a quadriplegic after a spinal cord injury left him paralysed in all four limbs. Turning personal adversity into purpose, Johar established FOD to address the lack of infrastructure, training, and employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
Over the years, the organisation has focused on helping individuals achieve economic self-reliance through initiatives such as self-employment, education assistance, and the provision of assistive devices. FOD also runs Unnati, a rehabilitation centre that trains people with disabilities in information technology, tailoring, upcycling, and handicrafts such as making newspaper pencils.
Johar’s work earned him 27 awards for courage and social service, and his story was featured on Satyamev Jayate in an episode dedicated to disability inclusion.
Art as Empowerment
Through Beyond Limits, FOD continues Johar’s mission of shifting the narrative around disability — from one of limitation to one of limitless potential. The exhibition offers not only a platform for artists to showcase their skills, but also an opportunity for the public to engage with art that challenges conventional ideas about ability and creativity.
