Mumbai: In a move to honour the legacy of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan on Saturday announced the establishment of the ‘Deendayal Upadhyaya Chair’ at the Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skill University. The initiative aims to “promote Upadhyaya's philosophy of Integral Humanism, which seeks a balanced approach between communism and capitalism”.
Radhakrishnan, also the Chancellor of the University, shared the news during a special event held at Ruia College in Mumbai, commemorating the diamond jubilee of Upadhyaya's 1965 lecture series on Integral Humanism.
He explained that the Chair would serve as a platform to propagate Upadhyaya's ideals, particularly his vision for a harmonious society that blends social equity with economic development.
"Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya had envisioned a society where individual well-being was aligned with the collective good. His thoughts continue to inspire our nation today," Radhakrishnan said.
The announcement was made in the presence of several dignitaries, including Union Minister Piyush Goyal, state Minister of Skills and Employment Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Vice-Chancellors of various universities, and representatives from the Deendayal Research Institute.
In his address, the governor also highlighted how Upadhyaya’s teachings influenced former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who worked towards implementing many of his principles, particularly in the realm of rural development and social welfare.
"The current government's efforts, including providing free COVID-19 vaccines to all citizens and beyond, are an embodiment of Upadhyaya’s inclusive vision," he said.
Radhakrishnan further urged the gathering to adopt Upadhyaya’s approach of mindful living. "We must embrace his teachings: avoid waste, manage resources wisely, and contribute to society. Living not just for oneself but for others is key," he added.
