Mumbai: The ruling BJP is set for major organisational changes, from mandal-level leaders to the national leadership. In Mumbai, a major revamp is underway, with two prominent leaders in contention for the city BJP president post.
Following a strong performance in the state assembly elections, the party is now focusing on upcoming local body polls. The BMC elections can be announced at any moment. The last BMC elections were held in 2017, when the BJP made a big leap by increasing its tally from 31 to 82 seats on its own.
At the time, Ashish Shelar served as the Mumbai BJP president. Later, the role was handed to Mangalprabhat Lodha, but after he became a minister, the responsibility was once again assigned to Shelar. Now, efforts to replace the Mumbai BJP president have begun.
On Monday, a key meeting was held at the Mumbai BJP office, attended by BJP’s central organization secretary Shiv Prakash, acting state president Ravindra Chavan, all Mumbai MLAs and district presidents. Organisational changes were discussed during the meeting.
Pravin Darekar and Amit Satam are the two names currently being considered for the Mumbai BJP president’s post. After the formation of the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, Darekar was appointed the party’s group leader in the Legislative Council.
He also holds considerable influence over the Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank. Satam has contested assembly elections three consecutive times from the Andheri East constituency. Notably, both Darekar and Satam hail from the western suburbs of Mumbai.
After the state assembly elections, the BJP launched its Sangathan Parv Abhiyan in Maharashtra and registered 1.5 crore new members. This campaign is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming local body elections.
At the organisational level, the party is currently in the process of appointing mandal and taluka presidents. As part of its strategy for the upcoming municipal and local body elections, the BJP is focusing on strengthening its grassroots structure. Winning the Mumbai municipal corporation is a key mission for the party.
