Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam among four eminent personalities nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India Droupadi Murmu in a significant move recognising excellence in public service and scholarship.
Apart from Nikam, the President also nominated former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, educationist C Sadanandan Master and academic Dr Meenakshi Jain.
The nominations have been made under Article 80 (1)(a) and Clause (3) of the Indian Constitution, which allows the President to nominate up to 12 members to the Rajya Sabha from among persons having special knowledge or practical experience in literature, science, art and social service.
Nikam, who was recently fielded as the BJP candidate from the North Central Mumbai Lok Sabha constituency, had lost the election to Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad. However, in recognition of his legal expertise and service to the nation, he has now been nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
Nikam played a significant role as the special public prosecutor in several high-profile cases, most notably in securing the death sentence for Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Nikam has also represented the government in numerous sensitive and critical criminal cases.
To celebrate the occasion, a grand event was held at Nikam’s residence near Barrister Nikam Chowk in Jalgaon, where family members, BJP leaders and supporters gathered.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also extended his congratulations.
As a Rajya Sabha member, Nikam will receive the same salary and benefits as other MPs, including a monthly salary of Rs1.24 lakh, constituency allowance, daily allowance, office maintenance, travel reimbursement, official accommodation, and access to medical and communication facilities. After retirement, MPs are entitled to a pension of Rs25,000 per month, with an additional Rs2,000 for each year of service beyond five years.
