Kanpur: Kanpur Zoo has incurred an estimated loss of ₹50 lakh as it remains closed to visitors for over 50 days, since May 13, 2025. The closure was implemented due to the threat of bird flu among its wildlife.

According to Zoo Ranger Naveed Ikram, the zoo typically generated ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 in ticket sales daily, with higher revenue on weekends. The closure during the peak summer vacation period, particularly through May and June, has significantly amplified the financial impact.

The Kanpur Zoo attracts visitors from surrounding districts, making the summer months a crucial period for footfall. The zoo was initially closed after a lion, Patodi, brought from the Gorakhpur Zoo for treatment, died on May 16, 2025.
