The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has given a big good news to Rohit Sharma's fans by approving the proposal to name a stand at the Wankhede Stadium after Indian captain Rohit Sharma. The decision was taken during the association's Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Tuesday, April 15.
Apart from Rohit Sharma, two other stands will be named in honor of former BCCI president Sharad Pawar and legendary batsman Ajit Wadekar. The proposal to name the stands after the three cricket legends was put forward by politician and MCA apex council member Milind Narvekar. During the AGM, the MCA also announced that the match-day office at the MCA Pavilion will now be known as the MCA Office Lounge, built in memory of former board president Amol Kale.
The MCA said in a statement, "Another key resolution passed during the AGM was the approval of naming the stands at the Wankhede Stadium. The resolution was initially moved by Mr Milind Narvekar and seconded by Mr Jitendra Awhad. The House unanimously approved the naming of the stands."
The MCA also passed a resolution to increase the corpus for affiliated clubs to Rs 75 crore, which is planned to be increased to Rs 100 crore in the coming years, aimed at strengthening infrastructure at the grassroots level and supporting the long-term growth of cricket in the city. MCA President Ajinkya Naik said, "Today's decisions reflect our deep respect for the pillars of Mumbai cricket and our determination to build an even stronger future. These stands and these lounges will always resonate the legacy of those who built the cricket spirit of Mumbai brick by brick, run by run." It is noteworthy that there are already stands named after many legends of Indian cricket in the Wankhede Stadium, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant and Dilip Vengsarkar.
