High BP in young age: High blood pressure was often considered a disease of aging, but now it is rapidly affecting the youth as well. The increase in cases of high BP in people aged 25-35 years has become a cause of concern for health experts. According to doctors, the major reason for this is today's changing lifestyle and some bad habits, which we are doing unknowingly in our daily lives.
Blood pressure is the pressure of blood flow in our body, which comes out of the heart and reaches the rest of the body through arteries. When this pressure becomes more than normal, it is called high blood pressure (High BP or Hypertension). It is a "silent killer" because its symptoms are not very clear in the beginning, but gradually it can damage the heart, kidneys, brain and eyes.
If high BP is not controlled in time, it can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and even affect eyesight. There can be many reasons behind increased blood pressure - some physical, some mental and some lifestyle habits. Let's know why high BP occurs:
Eating too much saltThe hidden salt in our daily food is a major cause of high BP. Processed food, chips, namkeen, ready-to-eat items and outside food all have high sodium content. Excess salt retains water in the body, which increases pressure on blood flow and the BP goes up.
Sedentary habits (working for long hours while sitting)Sitting without moving for a long time, i.e. a sedentary lifestyle has become the most common cause of high blood pressure among the youth. Office work, screen time and lack of exercise cause poor blood flow and increase pressure on the arteries.
Lack of sleep and stress
Lack of sleep and chronic stress are direct factors that increase blood pressure. When there is no sleep or the mind is constantly stressed, the level of hormones like cortisol increases in the body, which increases the heart rate and BP.
Excessive consumption of junk food and caffeine
Eating burgers, pizza, cold drinks, energy drinks and drinking tea and coffee regularly can increase blood pressure. These things not only increase weight but also affect BP by increasing the level of salt and caffeine in the body.
Smoking and alcohol addiction
The habit of smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol at an early age is causing high BP in many youngsters. Nicotine shrinks the blood vessels and the blood pressure starts rising rapidly. Alcohol also makes the heartbeat abnormal and makes the BP unstable.
What to do for protection?Exercise or walk for at least 30 minutes every day
Stay away from salt and processed foods
Get a full night's sleep (at least 7-8 hours)
Adopt meditation, yoga to manage stress
Keep getting your BP checked regularly, even if there are no symptoms
