Dark spots on the skin are considered a major cosmetic problem. These small brown spots, which appear on the face, arms, and shoulders, are often harmless and are associated with ultraviolet radiation from the sun. However, recent research has found that changes in skin color may be a symptom of liver health.
The liver is a vital organ responsible for eliminating toxins from the body. It is also involved in bile production, hormones, and metabolism. If the liver is not functioning properly, its effects can be visible on the skin.
In addition to sun spots, hyperpigmentation of the skin, or excessive darkening, can sometimes be a sign of liver problems. This problem is often caused by hormonal imbalances or a buildup of toxins in the body. Research has found that people with chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis or hepatitis, are more likely to develop skin hyperpigmentation.
It's important to distinguish between age spots and liver spots. Age spots are spots that grow slowly and appear on areas that have been darkened by heat. These spots are simple, flat, and uniformly brown in color. However, liver spots appear suddenly and are a slightly darker gray or earthy color. These spots can appear on the face, neck, palms, soles of the feet, or sometimes even the tongue.
The liver plays a vital role in hormone metabolism. When the liver isn't functioning properly, the body's hormonal balance is disrupted. This causes cells called melanocytes to become overstimulated, leading to darkening of the skin. This is why some people have more dark spots on their face or hands.
When the liver is weak, toxins are not filtered properly from the body. This causes oxidative stress in the body. This damages cells and activates melanocytes. Therefore, these spots sometimes appear on unexpected parts of the body.
