Darkest Chapter of Akbar: Historians are divided on whether Akbar was great or cruel. Many incidents like massacre, forced conversion and demolition of temples took place during Akbar's reign.
Although many foreign invaders came to India, the rule of the Mughals is considered the most controversial. There is a lot of discussion about the history related to the Mughals. Recently, the rule of the Mughals and its rulers has been discussed in a new way in the social science book of NCERT. It is reported that this book will be implemented from the academic session of 2025-26. Earlier in these books, Akbar was described as great and his reign was also described as great. Let us tell you some stories of the cruelty of this great ruler.
Although Akbar was called a liberal ruler, but during the siege of Chittor fort in 1568, the Mughal army killed more than 30,000 common people. Due to this, the women there were forced to commit Jauhar.
During this time, Akbar marched from Agra to Chittor with 40,000 soldiers. The soldiers who fought risking their lives used to protect this fort. To conquer this fort, he stopped the supply of essential goods going inside the fort.
Akbar and his army laid siege to the Chittor fort for months. Despite trying hard, they were unable to conquer it.
When the Rajputs were martyred while fighting, the Mughals entered the fort, but by then all the women had committed Jauhar. Then Akbar and his army, frustrated by the long-running war, killed 20,000 to 30,000 people.
He made the women and children who survived the massacre his slaves. After this victory and massacre, Akbar sent a message that we have captured many forts and cities of infidels in Rajasthan. We have erased their signs and destroyed the temples.
These incidents are a black spot on Akbar's reign and his history. It is also said that this was the third Jauhar in the history of Chittor.
