During a recent visit to Microsoft’s headquarters in Seattle, Chanel CEO Leena Nair and her leadership team discussed the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and the luxury sector. Nair emphasized the importance of engaging with AI, stating, “AI is everywhere... and it’s going to be transformative in our world, so luxury has to engage with it, Chanel has to engage with it.”
However, a humorous moment occurred when Nair requested an image of Chanel's senior team from ChatGPT, only to be met with an "all-male team in suits." This portrayal was far from accurate, as Nair pointed out that 76% of her organization comprises women and 96% of their clients are female. “This is what you’ve got to offer, ChatGPT? Come on,” she remarked, highlighting the need for more accurate representation in AI-generated content.
The incident sparked a discussion about the biases inherent in AI technology. Nair, who previously served as Unilever's first female Chief HR Officer, urged tech leaders to adopt a more "humanistic" approach to AI development. “I constantly talk to my friends in tech... saying, come on, guys, you’ve gotta make sure that you’re integrating a humanistic way of thinking in AI,” she said.
Chanel is committed to integrating AI while maintaining its brand heritage. Nair noted that the company is working to become "AI-ready," focusing on data governance and various experiments with productivity tools and chatbots on their website. Despite embracing technological advancements, Nair emphasized the importance of human creativity, stating, “Ensuring that AI supports human creators... is very much core to who we are at Chanel.”
As the luxury industry continues to explore the potential of AI, Nair's call for better representation and ethical development highlights the ongoing conversation about technology's role in shaping corporate culture.
