Yellow staining on a toilet seat is common in public toilets, but it's also possible for toilets in homes to have stains. Having to use a toilet with yellow stains is not pleasant for you and for guests in your home. The good news is that it's possible to revive your seat to its original colour.
Having exhausted multiple methods, a cleaning enthusiast took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page for recommendations. Frankie Meyer said, "What's the best thing for removing yellow stains on the toilet seat. I've tried everything." Many group members were quick to ward off the use of bleach.
Harriett Begent wrote: "The bleach makes the seat go yellow." Lucy Headland urged, "Don't use bleach will make it more yellow."
Maria Gray pointed out: "Bleach sends it yellow." Carrie Glew explained: "Yellow stains are usually caused by bleach. Bleach is ok on the porcelain bowl, but on certain plastics or wood, it will tarnish and turn yellow."
Instead, one of the most popular suggestions was to use a magic sponge, otherwise known as a magic eraser. Tessa Sears said, "Magic sponges worked for me in my student house."
Rachel Barnett commented: "Magic sponges every time. I picked up this tip from this group and never looked back
Jill Hpkin said: "I tried everything, nothing worked. Then I tried a magic sponge. Rubbed the area for five seconds, and it all wiped off. All stains gone! New seat not required."
Angela Johanson wrote: "Wet magic sponge, I use them in the school I work at." Teresa Sheppard agreed: "Magic sponge gets rid of all the marks/stains."
Magic erasers are made of melamine foam, which acts like a very light sandpaper. This is what helps them take up those super tough stains on toilet seats.
To use them, dampen slightly and use small circular motions until the stain fades, then wash the surface clean to remove any residue.
Be sure to test it in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it isn't damaging the surface.
