Many gardeners have issues with cats urinating in their gardens, leading to foul smells and an unappealing space to sit in over the summer during hot days. Cats often 'spray' as a way of communicating, marking their territory and sometimes, attract mates. While this is annoying and downright smelly, we don't want to cause any harm to these beautiful animals. So, there are natural solutions that we can use.
One person shared her frustrations in a Facebook group and asked other members for solutions to the issue, as cats kept entering her garden and urinating in her outdoor space. Posting in the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, Julie O'Keeffe said that cats keep spraying at her doors, so she was looking for solutions. "Does anyone have a solution to stop other people's cats spraying at my doors?" she asked. "It happens all the time, and I am just getting so sick of that horrible smell in my garden."
Other group members were quick to share their tips, with many people saying the same thing. According to multiple Facebook users, orange peels are a great natural way to deter cats from your garden.
Tina Standen commented: "Put orange peel in your garden or orange oil. Cats hate it and will deter them."
Meanwhile, Joanne Daley wrote: "They hate the acid smells like orange peel. They will never enter your garden again."
The hack is backed by experts. The folks at Cats Luv Us say that the trick does indeed work. "Cats, with their sophisticated snouts, can detect scents from afar, but the strong aroma of citrus is a definite no-go zone for them," they explain. "This natural aversion can be a handy trick for gardeners and homeowners looking to protect their green patches from becoming kitty litter."
Gardeners can place peels in flower beds and other areas where they don't want cats to be. Additionally, they can use oranges to make a spray for their garden to spread the scent around.
Cats Luv Us explains that the "magic" is in the oils found in the orange peels. They say: "These oils release a potent scent that cats find particularly off-putting. By strategically placing these peels around your garden or home, you can create an invisible barrier that speaks louder than words."
Other ways to deter cats from your garden include putting white vinegar on your patio, scattering coffee granules or introducing a sprinkler.
