Nothing is better than starting the day with a home-cooked breakfast, and if you want to indulge your sweet tooth, why not make some chocolate croissants? It might be easy to grab this French pastry from the supermarket, but it tastes so much better fresh from the oven, warm and oozing with melted chocolate.
Karon Grieve, a baker and founder of Larder Love has shared it takes roughly five minutes to prepare these tasty pastries and then they will be ready to eat within 20 minutes. She said: "These pain au chocolat have only two basic ingredients, so really you can't go far wrong with that. They are SUPER easy to make, and I really mean that folks!"
You only really need ready made-puff pasty and your favourite chocolate to make pain au chocolat which is why it is much a easy dish.
Karon said: "I always keep rolls of puff pastry in my freezer. Good quality all-butter ready-made puff pastry is used by many chefs, so why bother with the hassle of trying to make your own when the store-bought stuff is so good."
You are welcome to make the pastry yourself, but it can be time-consuming as it can take around two days as you need to chill, fold and rest the dough.
Sugar is used in this recipe to help brown the pasty to make crispy and help seal the dough but if you do not have it in your kitchen cupboard then do not worry as you can easily make pain au chocolat without it.
How to make homemade pain au chocolatIngredients
- 375g of all-butter pastry (ready rolled)
- 120g of dark or milk chocolate
- Half a teaspoon of granulated sugar
- Half a teaspoon of icing sugar

Method
To begin, preheat the oven to 200C (180C or Gas Mark). Then unroll the pastry and cut it into four short and wide strips. They should all be equal-sized and look like rectangles
Place a few pieces of chocolate near the end of each rectangle. If you make them to be even chocolatey, you can add a second row of chocolate.
Then, fold the pasty over the chocolate and keep rolling until the pasty is completely closed. You should have four pain au chocolats.
Gently press the edges of the pasty to seal it. Then, Mixmix the granulated with a small amount of water to make a glaze and brush it all over the pasty.
Place the pain au chocolats on a baking tray then bake in the oven for 20 minutes until golden, crispy and are filled with gooey chocolate.
Sprinkle a little icing sugar on top and your warm buttery chocolate pasties are ready to serve.
