Major food brand recalls snack beloved by Brits over 'diarrhoea and fever' fears

A popular brand of scotch eggs have been recalled over fears they may trigger food poisoning. Salmonella bacteria was found to have contaminated two products - Wall's The Classic Scotch Egg and Wall's 2 Classic Scotch Eggs.

Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with an underlying health condition are most at risk of serious illness caused by infection. A notice issued by the Food Standards Agency said: "The Compleat Food Group is recalling Wall's The Classic Scotch Egg and Wall's 2 Classic Scotch Eggs because Salmonella has been found in the products.

"Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

"If you have bought any of the above products do not eat them. Instead, return them to your nearest store for a full refund."

The recall applies to the Wall's The Classic Scotch Egg in a 113g pack, and the Wall's 2 Classic Scotch Eggs in a 226g pack. Both have a best before date of July 2, 2025.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recently warned that salmonella infections had reached the highest level in a decade.

Some 10,388 people were infected in 2024, up 17.1% from 8,872 in 2023.

Children under 10 years old were particularly affected, accounting for 21.5% of cases.

Salmonella infections are most commonly caused by eating contaminated food, including poultry, meat, eggs, raw fruit or vegetables, and unpasteurised milk products.

It can also be spread between people, particularly in household settings, or through cross-contamination during cooking.
