Keeping carpets clean can be a challenge, especially when it comes to stubborn stains. Many people try vacuuming, scrubbing or using shop-bought sprays, but some marks just won't go away.
And if the stain is in a busy area of the home, it's even harder to ignore. Luckily, experts say there is one method that can remove carpet stains in just 10 minutes, and it doesn't involve any expensive equipment. All you will need is some kitchen staples, a clean towel and an iron.
The trick has been shared by cleaning professionals at Clean London Professional, who listed it among their top carpet cleaning tips.
It involves a three-step process. The first step is to vacuum the area thoroughly. This removes any crumbs or dirt so the method can focus directly on the stain.
Next, mix three parts water to one part white vinegar and pour the solution over the stained area. Leave it to soak in for five minutes.
Then place a clean towel over the spot and press a hot iron on top. The heat helps draw the stain out of the carpet and into the towel, much like a temporary tattoo in reverse.
However, it's important not to leave the iron in place for too long. You should check regularly and repeat the process until the stain lifts.
Other advice from the experts includes using a lint roller to collect pet hairs and small bits of debris that vacuums can miss, especially on long-pile carpets.
They also warn that rubbing stains can make them worse. Instead, it's best to blot gently from the outside of the stain towards the centre.
This helps stop it from spreading and pushing further into the fabric.
For a full deep clean, they suggest a homemade cleaner made from hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, essential oils, dish soap, fabric softener, and hot water.
This mixture can be added to a carpet shampooing machine and is a more natural option than many store-bought products.
Other clever tips include using baking soda to soak up oil stains. Once the powder forms a crust, it can be vacuumed up before dabbing the area clean.
They even recommend shaving cream to remove everyday dirt from lighter carpets. As well as lifting stains, it also helps restore softness and texture.
