has come under fire after with what critics are calling an "excessive" security entourage. The former Suits actress and Duchess of Sussex arrived at the Gypsy revival on Thursday night flanked by a , including three black SUVs and an unmarked NYPD police vehicle.
The strict security setup, which allegedly involved two intelligence detectives riding in the police car and the use of former Secret Service agents, sparked backlash from members of the US paparazzi, who labelled the measures "absolutely abnormal, totally over-the-top and excessive," according to Page Six.
The Duchess of Sussex attended the show without her husband, Prince Harry, who is currently visiting Ukraine. Before the theatre outing, she dined at Ralph Lauren's upscale Polo Bar, adding another layer of exclusivity to her solo evening in Manhattan, which some critics have described as out of touch.
Critics have questioned whether public resources were used during her visit. One anonymous photographer told Page Six: "Meghan is out of control and over-the-top, and it's ridiculous if the city is paying for this.
"And if NYPD was not on duty, then they shouldn't be allowed to run lights. Somebody's got to be paying for it."
Despite the heavy security presence, the Duchess of Sussex was said to have remained low-key among theatre-goers. After the show at the Majestic Theatre, she went backstage to meet members of the cast, including six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald.
The Duchess later shared photos from the evening on Instagram, gushing about McDonald's performance and the "magic" of the production.
"Meeting @audramcdonald for the first time last night... Her performance will leave you absolutely speechless. Full body chills," Meghan wrote, adding that the standing ovation "would still be happening" if the theatre hadn't closed for the night.
The official Gypsy production account later shared its own snaps of the royal visit, writing: "Thank you for visiting us at the Majestic, @meghan. It was an honour to have you in the audience for #GypsyBway!"
Reactions online were sharply divided. While some praised Meghan for supporting the arts and celebrating a diverse Broadway cast, others echoed criticism over her apparent use of high-level security and public services.
Fans on social media were quick to defend her, with comments. "This is too amazing. Audra and Meghan," one said and "So glad that Princess Meghan got to meet the cast & especially Queen Audra."
As of now, it remains unclear who covered the costs of the NYPD involvement or the full security detail. The NYPD has not issued a statement.
