The "masterpiece" Amazon Prime drama We Were Liars focused on a deep dive into the mistakes of the four teens. It focuses on 17-year-old Cady Sinclair, who spends her summers on a private island and after an awful accident, she struggles to remember everything about her twisted past.
She spends the summer with her cousins and their friend Gat, but uncovers a terrible secret as the series progresses. It hit screens on Amazon Prime earlier this year, but was published as a novel 11 years prior in 2014. After turning it into a series, viewers have described it as "gut-wrenching", a "masterpiece" and left one user saying they were "emotionally ambushed".
The series includes Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair Eastman, Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil, Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield, and Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair Dennis.
The series follows the shocking mystery and uncovering the dramatic events that took place in the years prior; and while some people had read the books and knew what was coming, others had a complete surprise.
But even those who had read the books beforehand have praised the series as being perfectly true to the books -- in fact only one complaint has come up multiple times, which is that the actors are substantially older than the characters they're playing, though this is quite common in TV.
Users flocked to IMDB to share their thoughts with over 200 ratings submitted regarding the show.
One user begged some viewers with a controversial take to separate their opinions from the book, adding: "The comparison to the book does not allow it to be a masterpiece as its own show. The show was so well done, so devastatingly sad, and just filled with such great storytelling."
Another wrote: "I thought I was going to be watching a dysfunctional rich family, in their gorgeous summer homes with a who done it type plot. Instead, I got emotionally ambushed by a plot twist that drop kicked me straight into a puddle of my own feelings.
"I've been sobbing for 25 straight minutes. Like ugly crying ya'll. Can't breathe, someone hold me, kind of sobbing."
Another praised the adaptation as they wrote: "Watching the characters Cadence, Gat, Johnny, and Mirren come to life and follow their summer in the series was really moving. They did a great job portraying each character. The visuals were so overwhelming at times that I had to remind myself it is just a series."
The show has also been renewed for a second season, though the date is yet to be confirmed.
