Star Trek legend William Shatner makes huge career announcement

Star Trek icon William Shatner says he is still a singer - even though he reads out the lyrics to songs he records. The veteran Hollywood actor, who shot to fame as Captain James T Kirk in the 60s sci-fi series, has released more than 10 albums and has a new one on the way.

But he objects to being classed a "spoken word" artist. The 94-year-old said: "I hate that phrase because English is a language and all languages have a music to it. So since I speak English, I hear the music of English and I write for that music. Then somebody hears that music that I'm trying to send forth and inhabits it and it becomes something very magical."

The star has recorded an album which he is planning to call Things I Have Loved. He has dubbed it "maybe my finest moment as a musical performer".

And he added: "it's all about love. It's about love of music, love of art, love of dance, love of health... your health... how can I love you if I'm not healthy? It's maybe the most entertaining, meaningful piece of music I have put out there."
