A pretty little town just an hour outside London has been dubbed the 'ultimate' autumnal day out. Samuel (@LostInSamuel), who shares recommendations for hidden gem destinations in London and across the UK, urged people in a recent video to visit the town.
In the caption, he wrote: "Welcome to the ultimate day trip from London, a charming town where Four Weddings and a Funeral was filmed! I can't believe you can get to this gorgeous village just in less than an hour from London on the underground!" The town he was speaking of is Amersham. Nestled in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, the market town is divided into the Old Town and Amersham-on-the-Hill. The Old Town boasts buildings that are 700 years old and, unsurprisingly, a rich history. Much of Amersham Old Town is a conservation area with over 160 listed buildings. When visiting the town, a must-see is the 17th century Market Hall.
Expect to see quaint cottages and cobbled streets. It resembles a typical English village, complete with a 13th-century church and an abundance of pubs. One pub, The Kings Arms, dates to the 1400's, and now has 35 rooms that guests can stay in.
Also in the old town, tourists are able to find a medieval church that dates back to 1140 AD. St Mary's church is an astonishing site to behold as the ancient church has been a place of worship after being erected before the Middle Ages.
Amersham also offers boutiques, spas, historical sites and beautiful areas for walks and exploration. It's a great starting point for walks into the Chiltern Hills.
Meanwhile, Amersham-on-the-Hill is known for its modernity, featuring a lively high street and the Tube station. While it may not be as picturesque, residents still enjoy tree-lined streets.
Property guru Phil Spencer of Move IQ dubbed Amersham one of the top commuter towns for London. However, this charming town doesn't come cheap. The average property in Amersham will set you back £750,000.
There are 18 stops between Amersham and King's Cross, with the Metropolitan Line terminating at Aldgate. A 55-minute journey on the Metropolitan line will whisk you from Amersham to King's Cross.
