Get set to jet on the longest flight in the world as Australian flag carrier Qantas might just be embarking on the most ambitious initiative in the history of commercial aviation. All the way back in 2017, eight years ago, Qantas announced plans to launch the longest plane journey in the world from Sydney to London Heathrow.
At just over 20 hours, it will become the longest non-stop service available around the world. Currently, the longest direct flight is between New York and Singapore, clocking in at 18 hours and 50 minutes. The journey covers a whopping 9,537 miles from tarmac to tarmac.Singapore Airlines flies this specialist aircraft, the Airbus A350-900ULR jet, on these flights, which feature two classes: premium economy and business class.
However, in the first half of 2027, Singapore Airlines will lose its crown to the Sydney to London Qantas service.
Much to the disappointment of aviation enthusiasts, the initial 2025 launch was pushed back due to technical issues and pandemic-related delays. However, a new launch date has now been announced, just over a year away.
Covering an incredible 17,015 kilometres, the route has earned the nickname of 'Project Sunrise' as passengers on these planes will be on board for so long that they'll see two sunrises - so make sure you've got enough snacks to last the journey.
Spending nearly a whole day may sound amazing to some, but those who find it daunting should not stress, as the airline has hand-selected 12 Airbus A350S to fly the route.
To make these extra-long flights as bearable as possible, Qantas has worked with sleep scientists and various aviation experts.
This type of aircraft can normally accommodate around 300 passengers, but to ensure travellers are as comfortable as possible, this plane will instead carry 238.
This "means we not only maximise aircraft performance across long distances," says Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, but "We give our passengers more space and comfort."
There will be a Wellbeing Zone between economy and premium sections where passengers will be able to get out of their seats and stretch their weary legs - so make sure you pack your gym wear in your carry-on.
This custom-built area will feature integrated wall handles, a guided on-screen exercise programme, a hydration station and many refreshments.
The top-class plane will feature six first-class suites and another 52 in business class, while those in premium economy will have an 8-inch privacy headrest that adjusts and a calf rest.
Business class suites will have walls and doors for privacy, a lay-flat bed and a massive TV. First class flyers will also get a tablet to control the mood lighting, temperature and even the humidity.
First class suites also contain a large flexible work and dining space and a full-length wardrobe so you can fly around the world in style.
