Mirra Andreeva managed to get her "revenge" on coach Conchita Martinez during her day off at Wimbledon. The No. 7 seed advanced to her first quarter-final here after beating Emma Navarro in a top-10 clash on Sunday, and then told the Centre Court crowd she would be switching roles with Martinez when the 1994 Wimbledon champion competed in the invitational doubles event for retired players.
The 18-year-old said she was "already thinking about the poster" she was going to make, and she kept her word. On Monday, Andreeva took to Court 16 to cheer Martinez on while holding a gigantic, garish sign.
The seventh seed was pictured wearing a straw hat adorned with Wimbledon-inspired trinkets and pointed to her poster, which read: "Let's go! Senorita. Top spin. YOU ARE GOLDEN."
Andreeva has already had plenty of laughs with her coach this fortnight. After her second-round win, the teenager said Martinez "pushes me to my limit" while the Spaniard laughed and shook her head.
And the Russian was up to her old tricks during her on-court interview after beating Navarro on Monday. Asked whether she would get to coach Martinez during her invitational doubles campaign, Andreeva said: "I can get my revenge, finally. I think she starts tomorrow.
"I'm already thinking about a poster that I will make and I hope that some people will help me do this. I will come to the court with a huge poster, support and coach [her] because I think that's my time to get back at her."
She did exactly that, though Andreeva should stick to being a player - not a coach - as Martinez and her partner, retired British ace Greg Rusedski, suffered a 7-6(5) 6-3 defeat to Tomas Johansson and Katie O'Brien.
The No. 7 seed will be hoping to fare better when she returns for her quarter-final clash with Belinda Bencic on Wednesday. Andreeva has only reached one Grand Slam semi-final at last year's French Open, and she's hoping to go all the way here under her coach's guidance.
Martinez knows all about winning Wimbledon. She lifted the Venus Rosewater Dish here 31 years ago, and then helped Spanish tennis star Garbine Muguruza claim the crown in 2017.
The former world No. 2 started working with Andreeva last spring, and their partnership has proven wildly successful.
Andreeva won back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells this year, breaking into the world's top 10. She's the second-highest ranked woman left in the Wimbledon singles draw behind world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
And Martinez now has the perfect opportunity to return the favour by making her own sign for Andreeva when the teenager takes to Centre Court on Wednesday afternoon.
