Rashmika Mandanna, one of the most sought-after actresses in Indian cinema today, is riding high on the success of her latest film Kuberaa and has a packed schedule ahead. While she now enjoys massive popularity and critical acclaim, her journey to the top wasn’t always easy or even intentional. In fact, Rashmika never originally set out to become an actor and her family was far from thrilled when she chose that path.
In a recent interview, Rashmika opened up about the initial disapproval she faced at home when she expressed her desire to work in films. Coming from a conservative South Indian background, her parents were skeptical and unsure about the film industry. She shared that she had been raised with a focus on academics and not acting. After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Psychology and English Literature, her interests leaned more toward media and communication. However, her father had different expectations, he had hoped she would join and help run his business.
She explained that at that time, families like hers often viewed the film industry with suspicion. The idea of a daughter stepping into such a world was unsettling, especially for a family with no ties to entertainment. As the only child for several years before her younger sister was born, Rashmika was the center of her parents’ attention and protection. That made them even more hesitant to accept her career choice.
The conversations at home were far from easy. Rashmika recalled being the first person in her community to pursue acting, which brought its own set of challenges. She acknowledged that people around her judged her decision but she chose to move forward anyway, driven by her passion.
Fast forward to 2024, Rashmika is now a household name. Her latest release Kuberaa, directed by Sekhar Kammula, hit theatres worldwide on June 20 and has already made a strong impression at the box office.
The film, produced by Sree Venkateswara Cinemas LLP and Amigos Creations, features an ensemble cast including Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Jim Sarbh and Dalip Tahil. The plot follows the lives of four individuals, including a beggar, who are unwittingly chosen to act as benamis in a massive corporate fraud. Dhanush takes the lead as Deva Kallam and Rashmika plays a key role in this layered narrative.
Today, Rashmika stands as a testament to what persistence and self-belief can achieve. From overcoming traditional family expectations to becoming one of the leading faces in Indian cinema, her story continues to inspire thousands of young dreamers.
