PRAYAGRAJ: A newlywed couple from Pratapgarh district is among the missing after a devastating accident in Sikkim’s Mangan district on May 29, when a tourist vehicle lost control on a rain-soaked mountain road and plunged nearly 1,000 feet into the swollen Teesta river.

The couple, Kaushalendra Pratap Singh (29) and Ankita Singh (26), had got married just 25 days back and had gone to Sikkim for their honeymoon on May 24.

According to police, the vehicle was carrying 11 tourists and a driver and was returning from Chungthang to Gangtok when it lost control around 9 pm amid heavy rainfall. One person was killed, while three others were rescued. Eight tourists, including Kaushalendra and Ankita, remain untraceable. Those missing also include BJP’s Odisha Mahila Morcha secretary Itishree Jena. Of the 11 people travelling in the vehicle, six were from Jena’s family.

Search hampered by weather, landslides

The news has devastated the Pratapgarh couple’s families. Kaushalendra’s father Sher Bahadur Singh and five other family members have rushed to Si kkim and have been coordinating with local police, Army and rescue personnel. Singh expressed his anguish, saying, “We haven’t even found my son’s mobile phone yet. We’re living in immense pain and uncertainty.”

Ankita worked in the medicine department at Medanta Hospital in Lucknow. Kaushalendra, his parents’ only child, was preparing for the civil services exam in Delhi. Their honeymoon plans were finalised on a whim after their waitlisted train tickets were confirmed on May 22.

“They were so happy that morning,” Kaushalendra’s mother Baby Singh said, her voice cracking as she recalled her last conversation with the couple on May 29.

According to Sikkim SP Sonam Detchu Bhutia, the vehicle is still trapped under debris in the river. Despite the challenging terrain and adverse weather, teams from the ITBP, NDRF, and SDRF continue search operations. “The Teesta river is flowing nearly four metres above normal, and multiple roads remain blocked due to landslides,” he said.

Bhutia added that kin of Kaushalendra have reached Sikkim and were with the police team to search for the missing couple. “There were a total of 11 people on the ill-fated vehicle which fell in the river. We had warned them not to venture out on the night of May 29,” he said.
