SALEM: Two young boys died near Vazhapadi in Salem district on Monday night after their mother jumped into a sump in their house with them due to frequent fights with her husband over her fidelity.
The deceased boys have been identified as V Vigneshwaran, 6, and V Sathish Kumar, 3, sons of K Vijayakumar, 40, of Tukkiyampalayam, and Elavarasi, 34. Vijayakumar is a mason.
Around 8pm, Elavarasi jumped into the sump, which was originally a septic tank, with her sons. Neighbours heard their screams and rushed to save them. They were rescued and sent to hospital. But the boys were pronounced dead in hospital.
On learning of the incident, Vijayakumar rushed to hospital on a motorcycle. His two-wheeler collided with another motorcycle, and he suffered a leg fracture.
The Vazhapadi police arrested Elavarasi on charges of murdering her children. She was remanded in judicial custody.
