Jaisalmer: Barmer-Jaisalmer MP Umedaram Beniwal raised a strong objection in Parliament, Thursday, demanding an investigation into the ongoing water crisis in his region. He characterised the Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in 2019 to provide drinking water to every household by 2024, as a ‘substantial scam' due to severe underachievement in his constituency.

Beniwal criticised the govt's claims, stating that only 10-15% of the work had been completed in Barmer-Jaisalmer. "Certificates are being issued claiming water connectivity, but in reality, not a single drop has reached these households," he said, calling for an investigation into the irregularities and fraud within the scheme.

During the Lok Sabha's Zero Hour, Beniwal said the desert region, suffering from extreme heat and water shortages, is experiencing a worsening crisis. "Summer temperatures reach 50°C, and millions are struggling to access water. Despite decades of independence, basic amenities like drinking water remain a distant dream," he added.

Beniwal also called for the withdrawal of the planned closure of Indira Gandhi Canal from March 26 to May 27, 2025, a decision that would further exacerbate the crisis. "The closure will affect millions in Barmer-Jaisalmer and Balotra, worsening conditions for people, wildlife, and livestock," he added, citing past animal casualties from dehydration during similar closures.

Further addressing the Jal Jeevan Mission, Beniwal highlighted that only 10% of the work had been completed, with irregularities in tenders, substandard materials, and fraud between contractors and officials. "Existing infrastructure has been damaged, and the state government continues to promote these corrupt officials," he said, demanding immediate action, including the formation of a monitoring committee and a special budget for water conservation in the border region.
