East Singhbhum admin sets up 12 checkposts on inter-state borders

Jamshedpur: Following the implementation of the model code of conduct (MCC), the police have seized Rs 7.28 lakh from two inter-state checkpoints in East Singhbhum in the past two days.

On Thursday, the police recovered Rs 5.85 lakh from three pick-up van drivers during vehicle inspections at the Keshpur inter-state check-post on the West Bengal border. The amounts recovered from the three vehicles were Rs 2.39 lakh, Rs 2.36 lakh, and Rs 1.10 lakh, respectively, district administration officials said.

Two individuals, claiming to be soap distributors from Bandhgaon in West Bengal, said they were traveling to Chakulia to purchase soap from a factory. The third person, a chicken wholesaler from Baharagora, claimed he was returning home from West Bengal after selling his stock. However, none were able to provide documents to support their claims.

On Wednesday, Potka police seized Rs 1.42 lakh from two bike-borne vendors at the Tiring-Rasunchopa inter-state check-post near the Odisha border. The vendors, who claimed to be residents of Keonjhar in Odisha, said they were traveling to Jamshedpur to purchase cosmetic items.

District electoral officer (DEO) cum DC Ananya Mittal appealed to the public to carry relevant documents along with any cash they are carrying to provide proof when questioned. Additionally, the DC has instructed the police and magistrates stationed at the check-posts to conduct thorough checks and frisking to prevent the illegal movement of liquor, drugs, cash, explosives, and freebies across the district borders.

A total of 12 inter-state check-posts, six inter-district check-posts, and three within the urban circle have been activated for surveillance purposes. These check-points are being monitored through webcasting, the DEO added.
