"Sleeping has been the worst part of recovery by far. I bought a wedge for my bed and a neck pillow, and neither of those has been comfortable. Now I'm onto a pregnancy pillow. I still didn't sleep last night," she said in a post shared on Instagram. "I hate sleeping on my back, so I know these next few weeks are gonna be rough for me with sleeping."

Another post-op issue she is dealing with is the 'random' bruises, which she notes show up during the healing journey. The actress has confessed that it's been strange to see her body bruised and that she is recovering from it. “It's not an easy sight, and it's definitely brought up a lot for me,” she expressed.

Amurri also didn’t hide the reason why she underwent the surgery. In her blog, she revealed that getting the breast reduction surgery is something she’d ‘wanted to do for 20 years’.

"I have size 32F breasts, and I’ve had them since 20 years old," she wrote. "From the outside, it can seem glamorous, sexy, and fun (and when you’re naked, it can be!) but having extremely large breasts can not only affect you physically but also mentally. It can make you extremely self-conscious and insecure. They hurt your back, they’re hard to clothe, and most importantly, you can’t take them off and take a break. That’s been the hardest part."

Eva Amurri's breast reduction surgery and her choice not to keep it a secret have sparked conversations. Here’s everything you need to know about the surgery, its complications, and cost.

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgery carried out to reshape and create a smaller and more proportionate bust size. In this procedure, a board-certified surgeon removes fat, breast tissue, and skin from the breasts to achieve a desirable size and shape as preferred by the patient.

Individuals who have larger breasts often choose this surgery to solve problems such as chronic neck pain, back pain, or because it's making them self-conscious, or both. Men with the condition of gynecomastia also undergo this surgery. It is a major surgery, and so also has some potential complications.

What are the complications of breast reduction surgery?

As breast reduction surgery is a major surgery, it has similar risks. From bleeding to infection and undesired reactions to anesthesia, the risks may vary.

Some of the risks are:

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Damage to nerves, blood vessels, and other parts of your body
  • Allergies to tape, suture materials and glues, blood products, topical preparations, or injectable agents
  • Sensation in the nipple or breast may change, and this could be either temporary or permanent
  • Excessive firmness of the breast
  • Fluid buildup beneath the skin
  • Infection
  • Persisting pain
  • Poor wound healing
  • Possibility of revisional surgery
  • Potential inability to breastfeed
  • Scarring

How much does the breast reduction cost?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the latest statistics suggest that breast reduction (aesthetic patients only) could cost around $7,800. This is the average fee of a surgeon and not the total cost. Anesthesia, operating room facilities, and other related expenses are excluded. Also, the prices could vary according to the type of procedure the individual is prescribed, the surgeon's cost, the surgeon's experience, and the location.

According to the NHS, breast reduction surgery costs around £6,500 in the UK. This does not include the cost of any consultations or follow-up care.

The surgery is only carried out after analysing whether you are the right candidate and weighing the pros and cons of the individual.
