OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has emphasised the global demand for computing power following the announcement of a major multi-year chip deal with AMD , while stressing that the partnership does not replace the company's existing relationship with Nvidia.
“Excited to partner with AMD to use their chips to serve our users!" Altman wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“This is all incremental to our work with NVIDIA (and we plan to increase our NVIDIA purchasing over time). The world needs much more compute…," he added.
The statement came as AMD and OpenAI announced an agreement that will see the ChatGPT creator receive hundreds of thousands of AI chips from the Nvidia rival , potentially generating tens of billions in annual revenue for AMD. The deal also grants OpenAI the option to acquire up to 10% of the semiconductor company.
OpenAI-AMD deal structure
The agreement covers the deployment of hundreds of thousands of AMD graphics processing units (GPUs) equivalent to six gigawatts of computing power, with deliveries beginning in the second half of 2026. OpenAI plans to build a one-gigawatt facility using AMD's forthcoming MI450 chip series starting next year, when AMD expects to begin recognizing revenue from the deal.
AMD executives project the agreement will generate tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue. The company anticipates more than $100 billion in new revenue over four years from OpenAI and other customers expected to follow.
As part of the arrangement, AMD issued a warrant giving OpenAI the right to purchase up to 160 million AMD shares at 1 cent each throughout the duration of the chip deal.
The deal positions AMD as a stronger competitor to Nvidia, the dominant player in AI processors. Altman said the AMD partnership will help OpenAI build the AI infrastructure needed to meet its expanding requirements.
