NEW DELHI: BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya part of a high-level Indian parliamentary delegation visiting London made a pointed intervention on India’s historical wealth and colonial exploitation , saying that “many people looted us and built mansions for themselves, how much more will you loot?”
Speaking at an outreach event in the British capital, Bhattacharya said, “India has never looted. India was one of the richest economies dating back to centuries. India was never poor, India was never struggling. Our country has been attacked by numerous groups spanning centuries, yet India stood out as a strong, resilient economy.”
He also reminded the audience of India’s global contributions during the Covid pandemic, adding that with a population of 140 crores, “India sent medicine and supplies to over 70 countries.”
Bhattacharya is part of a seven-member multi-party delegation led by senior BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, formed by the Modi government after Operation Sindoor. This diplomatic outreach is aimed at drawing global attention to Pakistan’s terror links and reaffirming India’s zero-tolerance stance against terrorism.
The delegation includes leaders from BJP, Congress, TDP and Shiv Sena (UBT), among others. Their visit to London follows earlier stops in France, Italy and Denmark. Upon arriving in the UK, they paid floral tributes to Rabindranath Tagore at the Tagore Centre. Speaking on the occasion, Bhattacharya said, “Rabindranath was relevant during his lifetime and so is he today. He shall also remain relevant in the future.”
In his remarks, Bhattacharya took a swipe at what he called the hypocrisy of global powers that preach peace while fuelling conflicts for commercial gain. “Countries change their stance to sell ammunition; they preach to us about dialogues. They say everything can be sorted out by interaction,” he said. He warned that India is not seeking handouts but is sounding an alarm. “We are not at the doors of anyone with a begging bowl... We are here to alert all that what is happening with us will happen to you tomorrow.”
Bhattacharya also said that India’s firm stance on terrorism has received positive responses from British think tanks, especially regarding the misuse of international funds by Pakistan. “Our demand is Pakistan needs to be isolated diplomatically,” he said.
Praising global recognition of Narendra Modi’s leadership, he added, “You people are raising the slogan of ‘Modi Modi’ because PM Modi has become the face of a leader who is fighting against terrorism.”
