Send Push
NEW DELHI: The alleged gang-rape of a law student in Kolkata has sent shockwaves across the country, bringing back the haunting memories of RG Kar rape and murder case. The TMC government in the state came under fire after harrowing details of the incident emerged, with one of the accused being a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad office-bearer.

The three accused -- Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay -- have been arrested by the police and the college security guard has also been taken into custody.

The 24-year-old student said in her complaint that the trio raped her, video-recorded the assault, and threatened to circulate the footage if she reported the crime.

BJP demands immediate resignation of CM Mamata

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders protested against the crime and demanded chief minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation from the post. "This incident reveals the character of TMC, their thoughts towards women. I demand the immediate resignation of Mamata Banerjee as the CM of West Bengal. Under her rule, no one is safe," BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh said.

Police detained Union minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar while he was protesting in Kolkata over the alleged gang-rape at South Calcutta Law College.

"This is the face of democracy in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has ruined democracy in the state...The police has arrested me and other workers (of the BJP)," he said while he was being detained.

BJP leader Sambit Patra strongly criticised CM Mamata Banerjee saying, "On the 25th of June, a horrific case of gang rape involving our sister, a student aged approximately 24-25, occurred at Kasba Law College in Kolkata, creating an atmosphere of grief across the whole of India today. There is an air of disbelief about where Bengal is heading.Where there is a female chief minister, there ought to be sensitivity towards women, so why is there such insensitivity, such cruelty?"

Student reveals harrowing details of incident

The law student, has accused a former student leader, Manojit Mishra, and two junior students, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed, of gang-raping her on campus after forcibly taking her to the security guards’ room.

She said that the crime followed her rejection of a marriage proposal from Mishra, who, enraged, conspired with the others to carry out the assault.

She said in her complaint that the trio undressed and raped her, video-recorded the assault, and threatened to circulate the footage if she reported the crime. When she resisted, one of the accused allegedly struck her with a hockey stick.

“I touched his feet, but he did not let me go,” she wrote in her complaint. “They (Mishra and the two students) took me to the guards’ room forcefully, undressed and raped me.”

She informed that she was unlawfully confined for over three hours, during which she pleaded for medical help as she suffered a panic attack, but the perpetrators refused to assist her beyond allowing the use of her inhaler.

What are key developments into the probe

The Kolkata Police arrested three main accused, all connected to South Calcutta Law College, within 24 hours of the crime. Subsequently, the college’s security guard, Pinaki Banerjee , was also arrested. The accused have been produced before the Alipore court , with the police seeking their remand for further investigation.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognisance of the case, demanding a time-bound probe under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Meanwhile, BJP national president JP Nadda formed a four-member inquiry committee comprising Satpal Singh, Meenakshi Lekhi, Biplab Deb, and Manan Mishra to visit the crime scene and submit a report.

The incident occurred late on Wednesday and the accused include a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad office-bearer now on an ad hoc teaching assignment and two junior students.
