Israel on Monday prevented an Iranian conspiracy to assassinate Israeli scientists, mayors, and high-ranking officials in the defence sector and other key government positions.

According to the Israeli security agency Shin Bet , seven individuals were apprehended for allegedly plotting to murder a prominent Israeli scientists and the mayor of a major city in Israel.

The agency said, "According to the information accumulated in the defense establishment, scientists and mayors, as well as senior officials of the defense establishment and other Israeli officials are targets for attack by Iranian elements."

The primary suspect, identified as a 23-year-old Israeli national, reportedly made contact with an Iranian agent and was tasked with various assignments. He then proceeded to assemble a team to assist him in carrying out these tasks, which included spraying graffiti at various locations, setting vehicles on fire in Jerusalem's Ein Kerem neighborhood, and collecting intelligence.

The suspects, some of whom are Israeli citizens, all reside in Beit Safafa , an Arab neighborhood in Jerusalem that is divided by the Green Line, the 1949 armistice line established at the conclusion of Israel's War of Independence.

During the police investigation, it was discovered that the suspects were also instructed to carry out attacks against a senior Israeli scientist and the mayor of a large city, whose identities were not disclosed to the public. Additionally, the suspects had plans to detonate a police vehicle and throw a grenade at a house.

The Iranian agent reportedly offered to pay the suspects 200,000 shekels (approximately USD 53,000) for their services. Some of the suspects were paid 500 shekels (around USD 132) for photographing the targeted scientist's residence.

Investigators found a fake police identification plate, approximately 50,000 shekels ($13,000) in cash, and numerous credit cards during searches of the suspects' homes.
