Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday ridiculed US President Donald Trump’s claims that Washington destroyed Iran’s nuclear facilities, dismissing the assertion as delusional and branding Trump’s Gaza peace efforts as “empty talk and Zionist bravado.”
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Khamenei struck a defiant tone against the United States and Israel, responding to Trump’s recent remarks that Iran’s nuclear ambitions had been “wiped out” following US strikes in June.
“The President of the United States boasts that we bombed and destroyed Iran's nuclear industry. Very well, keep dreaming!” Khamenei wrote.
In another post, he lashed out at Trump’s visit to Israel, calling it a hollow attempt to bolster what he described as a demoralised Zionist regime.
“My take on the US President’s trip to occupied Palestine is that he went there with a load of empty talk and Zionist bravado to cheer up and boost the morale of the disheartened Zionists,” Khamenei said. “In the 12-day war, they got such a slap that they couldn’t believe it, didn’t expect it, and were left utterly demoralised.”
Khamenei’s remarks came after Trump told reporters at the White House that Tehran was “trying to survive” and would face renewed US strikes if it attempted to rebuild its nuclear programme.
“Today, Iran is trying to survive,” Trump said. “When I heard the reports two weeks ago, Iran is looking to build a nuclear weapon. I said, don’t worry about it… before they got even close, that site would be attacked and it would be wiped out.”
The exchange underscores renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran after Trump’s ultimatum earlier this year demanding that Iran halt all uranium enrichment. Tehran denies seeking a nuclear weapon, insisting that its enrichment activities are for peaceful purposes.
Trump’s comments coincided with growing instability in Gaza, where his administration has pushed a 20-point peace plan following years of conflict between Israel and Hamas. The ceasefire, brokered with US mediation, has been marred by violence, with Israeli strikes killing dozens over the weekend despite assurances that the truce remained intact.
