Powerful earthquake in Indonesia: 6.7 magnitude quake hits Papua; no tsunami warning issued

A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Indonesia 's Papua province on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey ( USGS ).

The seismic event, centred 70 km beneath the earth's surface, struck approximately 200 km from Abepura , a city with over 62,000 residents.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami alerts were necessary following the tremor.
