Pune: Two men stole a briefcase containing cash of Rs 1 lakh, clothes and documents, collectively worth Rs 1.64 lakh, from a car belonging to a former sarpanch of Theur on Dhole Patil Road around 7.50pm on Wednesday.
The former sarpanch, Navnath Kakade, who also runs a construction business, registered a complaint of theft with the Koregaon Park police on Thursday.
Sub inspector Shrikant Chavan of the Koregaon Park police told TOI that CCTV camera footage showed that one of the suspects diverted the SUV driver's attention to some currency notes on the street while pretending to be talking on his cellphone. His accomplice, meanwhile, stole the briefcase from the left side of the car when the driver got out of the SUV.
Two other aides were seen keeping an eye on the proceedings. "Two of them then took an auto and drove towards Pune railway station. They got down near the station and took another auto. We are tracing their trail," Chavan said.
The complainant had gone to the Charity Commissioner's office in Bund Garden for some work on Wednesday. His driver had parked the SUV near an eatery on Dhole Patil Road.
Chavan said that one person on the road alerted the driver about the theft. The driver chased them, but the duo and their accomplices fled. "The briefcase contained Rs 1 lakh, some clothes, the complainant's credit/debit cards, and PAN card, all collectively worth Rs 1.64 lakh," Chavan said.
